Divorce Calls Increase on Valentine’s Day

Divorce Calls Increase on Valentine’s Day

Individuals are more inclined to seek legal representation during the holidays.

Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a day about celebrating romantic love, at least in theory. In practice, it is a common day for divorce calls, signifying that the love is ending or has ended.

Traffic to my website doubled on Valentine’s Day, and I am not alone in this regard. Avvo, an online legal services marketplace, conducted a study and found that there is a 26% increase for divorce-related searches in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day. Over the past five years, Avvo has seen a 30% increase in people who are seeking divorce-related legal advice after the holidays and prior to Valentine’s Day.

The takeaway, then, is that there is a long-term trend demonstrating that the amount of people in need of divorce advice increases as Valentine’s Day approaches. What is less clear, however, is the underlying cause behind the spike in divorce inquiries.

Potential Causes for the Increase in Divorce Inquiries on Valentine’s Day

Since the numbers do not give any insight into the reasons for the divorce inquiry uptick, it is worth exploring why a person may consider divorce during the holidays or Valentine’s Day.

One explanation that seems fairly intuitive is that a dull or unromantic holiday can serve as a sobering reminder that the love and romance is gone. Similarly, a Valentine’s Day that seems mundane and lacks any semblance of spark or romantic chemistry could serve as a warning sign that your significant other is no longer someone you no longer view in a romantic light.

Perhaps the increase in divorce calls could be related to the time of year. After all, the winter season is cold and dreary, and the time after the holidays can lead to a crash of sorts. Alternatively, financial struggles could be at the heart of your marital difficulties. Worse, you could be thinking divorce after discovering that your spouse is having a romantic affair with somebody else on Valentine’s Day.

Whatever the reason, it is clear that plenty of people contemplate divorce and seek legal advice on Valentine’s Day.
