Stop the Prenup Stereotypes

There are several major misperceptions and stereotypes about prenuptial agreements that can prevent couples from considering this valuable option. At The McKinney Law Group, we specialize in helping couples prepare for their futures by showing them the benefits of a prenup.

There is an old expression that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. A prenuptial agreement can be that ounce of prevention. First, however, it takes getting past these stereotypes and misconceptions.

Prenups are for Those Who are Weak in Their Commitment to Each Other

This is one of the most significant and deepest stereotypes about prenuptial agreements. It needs to be discarded. There are plenty of challenging discussions couples have, or should have, before marriage. Religion, debts, children, and where to live are just a few. We also prepare for the future by getting life insurance, buying a home, or making other financial decisions. A prenuptial agreement should be another one of those practical discussions that can lead to common-sense decisions.

Prenups Set Up Expectations for Failure

This is simply nonsense. Being conscious of the potential pitfalls in the future is an intelligent position to take. Getting married is certainly an emotional decision, but it is also a legal contract. It impacts everything from health insurance to taxes. It would be impractical to ignore the impacts a failure in this legal agreement can lead to. If anything, discussions about a prenup can make a relationship stronger and more honest. It is certainly not going to be some sort of indication of indifference. Just the opposite.

Prenups are for the Wealthy

Many have the perception that a prenuptial agreement is just for the wealthy or when one partner has significantly more assets than the other. More and more couples are realizing prenups can protect both parties. An example is that of an inheritance. A prenuptial agreement can protect any future inheritance you or your partner may have coming. This is just one reason a prenuptial agreement is becoming more common among newlyweds.

At the McKinney Law Group, we specialize in prenuptial agreements for everyone. We just feel it makes sense to enter a relationship with eyes wide open.
